Carlow Active Travel Scheme – Old Dublin Road, Carlow

Kilwex Ltd. successfully delivered the Carlow Active Travel Scheme along the R888 Old Dublin Road on behalf of Carlow County Council, creating a safer and more accessible sustainable transport corridor for pedestrians and cyclists while supporting the Council’s wider Active Travel strategy.

Delivered under a PW-CF5 public works contract, the project involved extensive road and urban-realm upgrades within a constrained live-traffic environment approximately 1.5 km from Carlow Town Centre. Works included full-depth road construction and resurfacing, junction realignments, new and upgraded footways, and segregated cycle infrastructure, alongside the installation of five new signalised pedestrian crossings, traffic-calming measures, drainage infrastructure, public lighting alterations, and associated landscaping and accommodation works.

A particularly complex element of the scheme required civil and roadworks to be undertaken over an existing railway overbridge, demanding close coordination with Iarnród Éireann to ensure full protection of rail infrastructure and strict compliance with licence conditions and safety requirements.

Throughout construction, Kilwex maintained live traffic flows, uninterrupted access to residential and commercial properties, and effective stakeholder engagement through proactive communication and dedicated public liaison. The successful delivery of this scheme demonstrates Kilwex’s capability in managing complex urban infrastructure projects, integrating safety, stakeholder coordination, and programme certainty within high-traffic environments.
